Article 561 of the French Civil Code

Islands and landings that form in non-domain watercourses belong to the riparian owners on the side where the island has formed: if the island is not formed on one side only, it belongs to the riparian owners on both sides, starting from the line that is assumed to be drawn in the middle of the watercourse.

Les îles et atterrissements qui se forment dans les cours d’eau non domaniaux, appartiennent aux propriétaires riverains du côté où l’île s’est formée : si l’île n’est pas formée d’un seul côté, elle appartient aux propriétaires riverains des deux côtés, à partir de la ligne qu’on suppose tracée au milieu du cours d’eau.
