Article 75 of the French Code of Criminal Procedure

The judicial police officers and, under their supervision, the judicial police officers designated in Article 20 carry out preliminary investigations either on the instructions of the public prosecutor or of their own motion.

These operations fall under the supervision of the Public Prosecutor.
