The profession of chiropodist is taken to mean any person who makes orthopaedic fittings to measure for the foot, using orthopaedic shoes made to measure and moulded, or leg braces moulded for mass-produced or orthopaedic shoes, for a sick or disabled person with either a partial amputation of the foot, or an osteoarticular, muscular or neurological deficiency of the foot or the distal end of the leg, or of these two anatomical regions combined.
The fitting process covers the design, measurement and, if necessary, moulding, manufacture, fitting, delivery of the appliance, checking of its tolerance and immediate functional effectiveness, monitoring of the appliance, its adaptation and repairs.
The list of standard orthoses that can be issued by chiropodists is set by order of the Minister for Health.
