The birthing unit has at least one obstetric surgery room, which can be used for any abdomino-pelvic surgery related to pregnancy or childbirth requiring general or loco-regional anaesthesia, including in emergencies.
Post-intervention monitoring of the parturient is carried out under the conditions of continuous monitoring mentioned in articles D. 6124-97 et seq., either in a post-intervention monitoring room located in the immediate vicinity of the operating theatre, or in the delivery room under the conditions defined in article D. 6124-98.
Newborn care is organised either in a room specially designed for this purpose and adjacent to the operating theatre, or in the operating theatre. This room is equipped with medical devices enabling at least two children to be resuscitated at the same time. The list of these devices is set by order of the Minister for Health.
When the unit’s activity is less than 1,200 deliveries per year, the operating theatre may not be located in the birth sector, provided that it is included in an operating theatre, in the same building of the health establishment, in the immediate vicinity and with rapid access to the birth sector. In this case, an operating theatre is available to deal with obstetric emergencies.
When the unit’s activity exceeds 1,200 deliveries per year, the intervention room and the post-interventional surveillance room are either located within the birth sector, or are adjacent to it. In the latter case, one of the labour rooms must be able to be used as an intervention room if necessary. It is equipped accordingly.
