In all neonatal intensive care units, the following must be ensured :
1° The permanent presence every day of the year, twenty-four hours a day, of at least one paediatrician with proven experience in neonatal resuscitation ;
2° The permanent presence, 24 hours a day, every day of the year, of at least one nurse specialising in childcare or experienced in neonatology for every two new-born babies hospitalised in neonatal intensive care and for every three new-born babies hospitalised in neonatal intensive care; these staff are assigned exclusively to the unit and may not have other concomitant duties in another unit;
3° Supervision of paramedical staff, possibly jointly with the neonatology unit when the latter is located in the immediate vicinity;
4° The medical coordination of neonatology and neonatal intensive care activities, which may be shared when the units are located in close proximity to each other and when the volume of activity allows it;
5° The possibility of using other specialist doctors and a physiotherapist.
In addition, the unit organises reception, information and support for parents, where necessary with the assistance of a psychologist or psychiatrist.
