Article L131-19 of the French Monetary and Financial Code

The endorsement must be written on the cheque or on a sheet of paper attached to it, known as an allonge. It must be signed by the endorser. The endorser’s signature is affixed either by hand or by any non-handwritten method.

The endorsement may not name the beneficiary or may simply consist of the endorser’s signature, known as a blank endorsement. In the latter case, to be valid, the endorsement must be written on the back of the cheque or on the allonge.

L’endossement doit être inscrit sur le chèque ou sur une feuille qui y est attachée, dite allonge. Il doit être signé par l’endosseur. La signature de celui-ci est apposée, soit à la main, soit par tout procédé non manuscrit.

L’endossement peut ne pas désigner le bénéficiaire ou consister simplement dans la signature de l’endosseur nommé endossement en blanc. Dans ce dernier cas, l’endossement, pour être valable, doit être inscrit au dos du chèque ou sur l’allonge.
