Article L1321-3 of the French Public Health Code

The compensation that may be due to the owners or occupiers of land included within a protection perimeter for the abstraction of water intended for human consumption, as a result of measures taken to ensure the protection of this water, is set according to the rules applicable to expropriation for reasons of public utility. When the compensation referred to in the first paragraph is due as a result of the establishment of a close protection area as referred to in article L. 1321-2-1, it is payable by the owner of the water catchment.

Les indemnités qui peuvent être dues aux propriétaires ou occupants de terrains compris dans un périmètre de protection de prélèvement d’eau destinée à la consommation humaine, à la suite de mesures prises pour assurer la protection de cette eau, sont fixées selon les règles applicables en matière d’expropriation pour cause d’utilité publique. Lorsque les indemnités visées au premier alinéa sont dues à raison de l’instauration d’un périmètre de protection rapprochée visé à l’article L. 1321-2-1, celles-ci sont à la charge du propriétaire du captage.
