Article L162-2 of the French Monetary and Financial Code

Any person who has received counterfeit or falsified banknotes or coins is obliged to hand them in or have them handed in to the Banque de France or the Monnaie de Paris, depending on whether the banknotes or coins are counterfeit or falsified.

The Banque de France and the Monnaie de Paris are authorised to withhold and, if necessary, destroy currency signs that they recognise as counterfeit or falsified.

Toute personne qui a reçu des signes monétaires contrefaisants ou falsifiés a l’obligation de les remettre ou de les faire remettre à la Banque de France ou à la Monnaie de Paris, selon qu’il s’agit de billets de banque ou de monnaies métalliques.

La Banque de France et la Monnaie de Paris sont habilitées à retenir et éventuellement à détruire les signes monétaires qu’elles reconnaissent comme contrefaisants ou falsifiés.
