Article L162-2 of the French Monetary and Financial Code

Any person who has received counterfeit or falsified banknotes or coins is obliged to hand them in or have them handed in to the Banque de France or the Monnaie de Paris, depending on whether the banknotes or coins are counterfeit or falsified. The Banque de France and the Monnaie de Paris are authorised to withhold and, if necessary, destroy currency signs that they recognise as counterfeit or falsified.
