Article L1852-9 of the French General Code of Local Authorities

Volunteer firefighters who belong to a communal or inter-communal fire brigade and civic service firefighter volunteers, once they have completed their initial training, are expected to take part in all the tasks assigned to the fire and rescue services. They are obliged to undergo the training required to perform their duties. The costs of this training are part of the compulsory expenditure incurred by municipalities or their groupings for fire and rescue services. Anyone may become a volunteer firefighter, subject to meeting the aptitude conditions set by order of the High Commissioner, in order to participate in missions and actions falling within the scope of the public civil security service.

The rules applicable to volunteer firefighters and civic service volunteers of the firefighters are defined by order of the High Commissioner, subject to the competencies devolved to French Polynesia, particularly in terms of social protection.
