Article L200-4 of the French Code governing the entry and residence of foreign nationals and the right of asylum

Family member of a European Union citizen means a foreign national, regardless of nationality, who falls into one of the following situations:
1° Spouse of the citizen of the European Union;
2° Direct descendant under the age of twenty-one of the citizen of the European Union or his/her spouse;
3° Dependent direct descendant of the citizen of the European Union or his/her spouse;
4° Dependent direct ascendant of the citizen of the European Union or his/her spouse.

Article L200-4

Par membre de famille d’un citoyen de l’Union européenne, on entend le ressortissant étranger, quelle que soit sa nationalité, qui relève d’une des situations suivantes :
1° Conjoint du citoyen de l’Union européenne ;
2° Descendant direct âgé de moins de vingt-et-un ans du citoyen de l’Union européenne ou de son conjoint ;
3° Descendant direct à charge du citoyen de l’Union européenne ou de son conjoint ;
4° Ascendant direct à charge du citoyen de l’Union européenne ou de son conjoint.
