The mayor and deputy mayors, after being heard or invited to provide written explanations of the facts of which they are accused, may be suspended by reasoned ministerial decree for a period not exceeding one month. They may only be removed from office by a reasoned decree issued by the Council of Ministers.
An appeal against the suspension decree or the removal decree does not require the assistance of a lawyer.
Removal from office automatically entails ineligibility for the offices of mayor and deputy mayor for a period of one year from the date of the removal decree, unless a general renewal of the municipal councils is carried out beforehand.
