Article L312-1 of the French Tourism Code

A collective hostel is a commercial accommodation establishment that offers beds for the day in shared rooms as well as in single rooms to people who do not take up residence there. It may or may not be run for profit. It is operated by a natural or legal person on a permanent or seasonal basis. It has communal areas, including at least one restaurant. Sanitary facilities are shared or private in the rooms. It may comprise one or more collective buildings.

Une auberge collective est un établissement commercial d’hébergement qui offre des lits à la journée dans des chambres partagées ainsi que dans des chambres individuelles à des personnes qui n’y élisent pas domicile. Elle poursuit une activité lucrative ou non. Elle est exploitée, par une personne physique ou morale, de manière permanente ou saisonnière. Elle est dotée d’espaces collectifs dont au moins un espace de restauration. Les sanitaires sont communs ou privatifs dans les chambres. Elle peut comprendre un ou plusieurs bâtiments collectifs.
