Article L342-18 of the French Code governing the entry and residence of foreign nationals and the right of asylum

During the period in which he is held at the disposal of the courts, under the conditions set out in article L. 342-3, foreign nationals are given the opportunity, if they so wish, to contact their lawyer and a third party, to see a doctor and to eat.
