The dispensing of corrective lenses is subject to the existence of a valid prescription by a doctor or an orthoptist.
When corrective lenses or contact lenses are dispensed for the first time following a prescription, opticians may adapt the prescription with the written agreement of the prescribing practitioner.
Opticians may adapt initial prescriptions for currently valid corrective lenses when they are renewed, unless the doctor or orthoptist objects.
Opticians may also adapt, as part of a renewal, the optical corrections of initial prescriptions for ocular contact lenses, unless the doctor or orthoptist objects.
Opticians may only adapt and renew initial prescriptions for corrective lenses and ocular contact lenses issued pursuant to 1° of Article L. 4342-1 on condition that a visual assessment has first been carried out by an ophthalmologist, under conditions laid down by decree.
The optician-muyliner shall inform the wearer that the refraction examination carried out for the purpose of adaptation does not constitute a medical examination.
The optician may, if prescribed by a doctor, provide training in handling and fitting lenses.
