Article L542-5 of the French Code governing the entry and residence of foreign nationals and the right of asylum

When the foreign national’s right to remain has ended pursuant to b or d of 1° of article L. 542-2 and an obligation to leave French territory has been issued against him or her, the administrative authority may place him or her under house arrest or in detention under the conditions laid down in articles L. 752-1 to L. 752-4.

Lorsque le droit au maintien de l’étranger a pris fin en application des b ou d du 1° de l’article L. 542-2 et qu’une obligation de quitter le territoire français a été prise à son encontre, l’autorité administrative peut l’assigner à résidence ou le placer en rétention dans les conditions prévues aux articles L. 752-1 à L. 752-4.
