Article L744-4 of the French Code governing the entry and residence of foreign nationals and the right of asylum

The detained foreign national shall be informed as soon as possible that, in the place of detention, he or she has the right to request the assistance of an interpreter, counsel and a doctor, and that he or she may communicate with his or her consulate and any person of his or her choice. This information will be provided in a language that the detainee understands.
In the event of a large number of foreign nationals being held in detention at the same time, the rights referred to in the first paragraph will be notified as soon as possible.
The arrangements for the assistance of these parties will be specified, as necessary, by decree in the Conseil d’Etat.

L’étranger placé en rétention est informé dans les meilleurs délais qu’il bénéficie, dans le lieu de rétention, du droit de demander l’assistance d’un interprète, d’un conseil et d’un médecin, et qu’il peut communiquer avec son consulat et toute personne de son choix. Ces informations lui sont communiquées dans une langue qu’il comprend.
En cas de placement simultané en rétention d’un nombre important d’étrangers, la notification des droits mentionnés au premier alinéa s’effectue dans les meilleurs délais.
Les modalités selon lesquelles s’exerce l’assistance de ces intervenants sont précisées, en tant que de besoin, par décret en Conseil d’Etat.
