With a view to verifying compliance with the obligations to hold, carry and present the documents provided for in article L. 812-1 or to investigate and record offences relating to the entry and residence of foreign nationals in France, officers of the judicial police of the national police force or the national gendarmerie may carry out summary inspections of vehicles on the public highway, excluding private cars:
1° In an area between France’s land border with the States party to the Schengen Agreement signed on 19 June 1990 and a line drawn twenty kilometres below;
2° In the parking areas of motorway sections starting in the area referred to in 1° up to the first toll booth when it is located beyond the limits of this area, as well as in the place of this toll booth and the adjoining parking areas.
The judicial police officer may be assisted by the judicial police officers and deputy judicial police officers mentioned in Article 20 and 1° of Article 21 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
