Article R1221-2 of the French General Code of Local Authorities

The term of office of the members of the national council is three years, renewable.

If this term of office expires in the six months preceding the general renewal of the elected representatives of a territorial authority represented on the council under Article R. 1221-1, it may be extended for a maximum period of six months by order of the Minister responsible for local authorities.

For local elected members, the loss of the elective office in respect of which they were appointed entails their resignation from the National Council. This resignation does not take effect until the date on which the successor is appointed. The successor is appointed for the remainder of the term of office.

Article R1221-2

Le mandat des membres du conseil national est d’une durée de trois ans renouvelable.

Si ce mandat arrive à échéance dans les six mois précédant le renouvellement général des élus d’une collectivité territoriale représentée au conseil en vertu de l’article R. 1221-1, il peut être prorogé pour une durée maximum de six mois par arrêté du ministre chargé des collectivités territoriales.

Pour les membres élus locaux, la perte du mandat électif au titre duquel ils ont été désignés entraîne leur démission du Conseil national. Cette démission ne prend effet qu’à la date de la désignation du successeur. Celui-ci est nommé pour la durée du mandat restant à courir.
