Article R721-7 of the French Code governing the entry and residence of foreign nationals and the right of asylum

When the administrative authority requires the foreign national to surrender his or her passport or any identity or travel document in his or her possession, pursuant to article L. 721-8, it shall in exchange issue the foreign national with a receipt equivalent to proof of identity.
The time limit granted to the foreign national for his or her departure shall, where appropriate, be noted on this receipt.

Article R721-7

Lorsque l’autorité administrative prescrit à l’étranger la remise de son passeport ou de tout document d’identité ou de voyage en sa possession, en application de l’article L. 721-8, elle lui remet en échange un récépissé valant justification d’identité.
La mention du délai accordé à l’étranger pour son départ est, le cas échéant, portée sur ce récépissé.
