Article 272 of the French Code of Criminal Procedure

The president of the assize court shall question the accused as soon as possible, after the latter’s arrival at the prison and the handing over of the documents to the clerk’s office.

If the accused is at liberty, the procedure shall be as set out in Article 272-1.

The President may delegate one of his assessors to conduct this examination.

An interpreter must be called in if the accused does not speak or understand the French language.

Article 272

Le président de la cour d’assises interroge l’accusé dans le plus bref délai, après l’arrivée de ce dernier à la maison d’arrêt et la remise des pièces au greffe.

Si l’accusé est en liberté, il est procédé comme il est dit à l’article 272-1.

Le président peut déléguer un de ses assesseurs afin de procéder à cet interrogatoire.

Il doit être fait appel à un interprète si l’accusé ne parle ou ne comprend pas la langue française.
