Article 712-16 of the French Code of Criminal Procedure

In the exercise of their powers, the sentence enforcement courts may carry out or have carried out, throughout the national territory, all examinations, hearings, investigations, expert reports, requisitions, including those provided for by the article 132-22 of the Penal Code or any other measure, to enable a decision to individualise a sentence to be made or to ensure that a convicted offender complies with the obligations incumbent upon him following such a decision.

Dans l’exercice de leurs attributions, les juridictions de l’application des peines peuvent procéder ou faire procéder, sur l’ensemble du territoire national, à tous examens, auditions, enquêtes, expertises, réquisitions, y compris celles prévues par l’article 132-22 du code pénal ou toute autre mesure, permettant de rendre une décision d’individualisation de la peine ou de s’assurer qu’un condamné respecte les obligations qui lui incombent à la suite d’une telle décision.
