Article 734 of the French Code of Criminal Procedure

The court or tribunal imposing a sentence may, in the cases and under the conditions provided for in the articles 132-29 to 132-57 of the Penal Code, order that its execution be stayed.

The court may also defer pronouncement of the sentence in the cases and conditions provided for by the articles 132-60 to 132-70 of said code.

The procedures for implementing the suspended sentence and deferral are set out in this title.

Le tribunal ou la cour qui prononce une peine peut, dans les cas et selon les conditions prévus par les articles 132-29 à 132-57 du code pénal, ordonner qu’il sera sursis à son exécution.

La juridiction peut également ajourner le prononcé de la peine dans les cas et conditions prévus par les articles 132-60 à 132-70 dudit code.

Les modalités de mise en oeuvre du sursis et de l’ajournement sont fixées par le présent titre.
