Article 897-1-B of the French Code of Criminal Procedure

If the appellant in cassation resides outside the island where the court which handed down the contested decision has its seat, the statement of appeal provided for in Article 576 may also be made by letter signed by the applicant for judicial review and addressed to the registrar of the court that handed down the contested decision. On receipt of this letter, the Registrar shall draw up the notice of appeal and attach to it the letter from the appellant. Within the time limits set out in article 568, the applicant for cassation is required to confirm his appeal at the town hall or gendarmerie closest to his residence.

Si le demandeur en cassation réside hors de l’île où la juridiction qui a rendu la décision attaquée a son siège, la déclaration de pourvoi prévue à l’article 576 peut également être faite par lettre signée du demandeur en cassation et adressée au greffier de la juridiction qui a rendu la décision attaquée. Dès réception de cette lettre, le greffier dresse l’acte de pourvoi et y annexe la lettre du demandeur en cassation. Dans les délais prévus à l’article 568, le demandeur en cassation est tenu de confirmer son pourvoi à la mairie ou à la gendarmerie la plus proche de sa résidence.
