Article D326-1 of the French Tourism Code

A refuge is an establishment open to the public within the meaning of the article R. 143-2 du code de la construction et de l’habitation, whether manned or unmanned, situated at altitude in an isolated location.

Its isolation is characterised by the absence of access either by road or by ski lift open to the public and by its inaccessibility for at least part of the year to emergency vehicles and equipment.

The refuge is located in a mountain area within the meaning of Chapter I of Title I of Law no. 85-30 of 9 January 1985 on the development and protection of mountains.

Un refuge est un établissement recevant du public au sens de l’article R. 143-2 du code de la construction et de l’habitation, gardé ou non, situé en altitude dans un site isolé.

Son isolement est caractérisé par l’absence d’accès tant par voie carrossable que par remontée mécanique de type téléporté ouvertes au public et par l’inaccessibilité pendant au moins une partie de l’année aux véhicules et engins de secours.

Le refuge est situé en zone de montagne, au sens du chapitre Ier du titre Ier de la loi n° 85-30 du 9 janvier 1985 relative au développement et à la protection de la montagne.
