Article L1424-32 of the French General Code of Local Authorities

Each departmental or territorial fire and rescue service is placed under the authority of a departmental director of fire and rescue services, assisted by a deputy departmental director.

The departmental director and deputy departmental director of fire and rescue services are appointed to their posts pursuant to Article L. 1424-9 and, in overseas departments, after receiving the opinion of the minister responsible for overseas.

Chaque service départemental ou territorial d’incendie et de secours est placé sous l’autorité d’un directeur départemental des services d’incendie et de secours, assisté d’un directeur départemental adjoint.

Le directeur départemental et le directeur départemental adjoint des services d’incendie et de secours sont nommés dans leur emploi en application de l’article L. 1424-9 et, dans les départements d’outre-mer, après avis du ministre chargé de l’outre-mer.
