Article L160-1 of the French Insurance Code

Anyone claiming to have lost, destroyed or stolen a life insurance contract or policy, or a capitalisation or savings certificate or contract, where the security is to order or bearer, must notify the insurance, capitalisation or savings company at its registered office by registered letter or electronic registered letter, with acknowledgement of receipt. The receiving company will acknowledge receipt to the sender, in the same form, within eight days of delivery at the latest; at the same time, it will notify the sender that, as a precautionary measure and without prejudice to the rights of the parties, he must pay the premiums or contributions due on the due date, should the third party bearer fail to pay them, in order to preserve the full and complete effect of the opposed contract.

The declaration referred to in the previous paragraph entails opposition to the payment of the capital and all ancillary benefits.

Quiconque prétend avoir été dépossédé par perte, destruction ou vol d’un contrat ou police d’assurance sur la vie, ou d’un bon ou contrat de capitalisation ou d’épargne, lorsque le titre est à ordre ou au porteur, doit en faire la déclaration à l’entreprise d’assurance, de capitalisation ou d’épargne, à son siège social, par lettre recommandée ou envoi recommandé électronique, avec avis de réception. L’entreprise destinataire en accuse réception à l’envoyeur, en la même forme, dans les huit jours au plus tard de la remise ; elle lui notifie en même temps qu’il doit, à titre conservatoire et tous droits des parties réservés, acquitter à leur échéance les primes ou cotisations prévues, dans le cas où le tiers porteur ne les acquitterait pas, afin de conserver au contrat frappé d’opposition son plein et entier effet.

La déclaration mentionnée à l’alinéa précédent emporte opposition au paiement du capital ainsi que de tous accessoires.
