Article L174-3 of the French Insurance Code

The insurer is liable for the contribution of the insured goods to general average. Similarly, when the goods on board all belong to the insured, the insurer covers the losses that would have constituted general average if the goods had belonged to a third party.

L’assureur répond de la contribution des biens assurés à l’avarie commune. De même, lorsque les marchandises à bord appartiennent toutes à l’assuré, l’assureur garantit les pertes qui auraient constitué une avarie commune si les marchandises avaient appartenu à un tiers.
