Article L342-16 of the French Code governing the entry and residence of foreign nationals and the right of asylum

The foreign national may ask the liberties and detention judge to appoint counsel ex officio.
The unaccompanied minor is assisted by a lawyer chosen by the ad hoc administrator or, failing that, appointed ex officio.

L’étranger peut demander au juge des libertés et de la détention qu’il lui soit désigné un conseil d’office.
Le mineur non accompagné est assisté d’un avocat choisi par l’administrateur ad hoc ou, à défaut, commis d’office.
