Article L342-19 of the French Code governing the entry and residence of foreign nationals and the right of asylum

If detention in the waiting area is not extended by the end of the period set by the last detention decision, the foreign national is authorised to enter France on a regularisation visa for a period of eight days. He/she must have left French territory by the end of this period, unless he/she obtains a provisional residence permit, a provisional document issued when applying for a residence permit or an asylum application certificate.

Si le maintien en zone d’attente n’est pas prolongé au terme du délai fixé par la dernière décision de maintien, l’étranger est autorisé à entrer en France sous couvert d’un visa de régularisation de huit jours. Il devra avoir quitté le territoire français à l’expiration de ce délai, sauf s’il obtient une autorisation provisoire de séjour, un document provisoire délivré à l’occasion d’une demande de titre de séjour ou une attestation de demande d’asile.
