Article L813-7 of the French Code governing the entry and residence of foreign nationals and the right of asylum

If special circumstances so require, the criminal investigation police officer will personally notify the foreign national’s family and the person chosen by the foreign national of his or her detention.
If necessary, he or she will inform the public prosecutor for the purposes of an investigation in the interests of the children.

Si des circonstances particulières l’exigent, l’officier de police judiciaire prévient lui-même la famille de l’étranger et la personne choisie par ce dernier de son placement en retenue.
En tant que de besoin, il informe le procureur de la République aux fins d’instruction dans l’intérêt des enfants.
