Article R121-7 of the French Code of civil enforcement procedures

Where representation by a lawyer is not compulsory, the parties shall defend themselves.

They may be assisted or represented by:
1° A lawyer;
2° Their spouse;
3° Their partner or the person with whom they have entered into a civil solidarity pact;
4° Their parents or relatives in the direct line;
5° Their parents or relatives in the collateral line up to and including the third degree;
6° Persons employed exclusively in their personal service or by their company.
The State, the regions, the departments, the communes and their public establishments may be assisted or represented by a civil servant or an agent of their administration.
The representative, if not a lawyer, must provide proof of special authority.

Lorsque la représentation par avocat n’est pas obligatoire, les parties se défendent elles-mêmes.

Elles peuvent se faire assister ou représenter par :
1° Un avocat ;
2° Leur conjoint ;
3° Leur concubin ou la personne avec laquelle elles ont conclu un pacte civil de solidarité ;
4° Leurs parents ou alliés en ligne directe ;
5° Leurs parents ou alliés en ligne collatérale jusqu’au troisième degré inclus ;
6° Les personnes exclusivement attachées à leur service personnel ou à leur entreprise.
L’Etat, les régions, les départements, les communes et leurs établissements publics peuvent se faire assister ou représenter par un fonctionnaire ou un agent de leur administration.
Le représentant, s’il n’est avocat, doit justifier d’un pouvoir spécial.
