Article R1424-19-1 of the French General Code of Local Authorities

The departmental director of fire and rescue services performs the duties of director of the public establishment and head of the departmental corps. He has authority over all the personnel of the departmental or territorial fire and rescue service.

He is assisted by a deputy departmental director, head of the deputy departmental corps, who assists him or deputises for him, if necessary, in all his duties and who acts as interim director in the event of the director’s post becoming temporarily vacant.

He is also assisted by the chief medical officer of the health subdirectorate and the heads of fire and rescue groups, services and centres.

He may delegate some of his powers to his deputy, the chief medical officer and the heads of fire and rescue groups, services and centres.

Le directeur départemental des services d’incendie et de secours exerce les fonctions de directeur de l’établissement public et de chef du corps départemental. Il a autorité sur l’ensemble des personnels du service départemental ou territorial d’incendie et de secours.

Il est assisté par un directeur départemental adjoint, chef du corps départemental adjoint, qui le seconde ou le supplée, le cas échéant, dans l’ensemble de ses attributions et qui assure l’intérim en cas de vacance momentanée de l’emploi de directeur.

Il est également assisté par le médecin-chef de la sous-direction santé, les chefs de groupements, de services et de centres d’incendie et de secours.

Il peut déléguer certaines de ses attributions à son adjoint, au médecin-chef ainsi qu’aux chefs de groupements, de services et de centres d’incendie et de secours.
