Article R2512-10 of the French General Code of Local Authorities

For facades classified as historic monuments, included in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments or listed in the archaeological and artistic register of the Paris municipality (1st and 2nd categories), the mayor sets, in each case, the conditions for the fitting of nameplates in such a way as to cause the least possible damage to the architectural and monumental arrangements.

Old inscriptions of the names of streets and squares, whether public or private, or building numbers, engraved on stone or painted, which still remain on the buildings and are of historical interest, must not, under any circumstances, be obscured by the affixing of regulatory plaques.

Pour les façades classées comme monuments historiques, inscrites à l’inventaire supplémentaire des monuments historiques ou figurant au casier archéologique et artistique de la commune de Paris (1re et 2e catégories), le maire fixe, dans chaque cas, les conditions d’aménagement des plaques indicatrices de manière à porter le minimum d’atteintes aux dispositions architecturales et monumentales.

Les anciennes inscriptions des noms des voies et places soit publiques, soit privées ou numéros d’immeubles, gravées sur pierre ou peintes qui subsistent encore sur les immeubles et présentent un intérêt historique ne doivent, en aucun cas, être masquées par l’apposition des plaques réglementaires.
