Article R4412-4 of the French Labour Code

For the purposes of this chapter, the following definitions shall apply
1° “Hazard” means the intrinsic property of a chemical agent which is likely to have a harmful effect;
2° “Risk” means the probability that the potential for harm will be achieved under the conditions of use and/or exposure;
3° “Health surveillance” means the assessment of a worker’s state of health in relation to his exposure to specific chemical agents in the workplace;
4° Biological limit value, the limit of concentration in the appropriate biological medium of the agent concerned, its metabolites or an indicator of effect;
5° Occupational exposure limit value, unless otherwise specified, the limit of the time-weighted average of the concentration of a hazardous chemical agent in the air in a worker’s breathing zone over a specified reference period.

Article R4412-4

Pour l’application du présent chapitre, on entend par :
1° Danger, la propriété intrinsèque d’un agent chimique susceptible d’avoir un effet nuisible ;
2° Risque, la probabilité que le potentiel de nuisance soit atteint dans les conditions d’utilisation et/ou d’exposition ;
3° Surveillance de la santé, l’évaluation de l’état de santé d’un travailleur en fonction de son exposition à des agents chimiques spécifiques sur le lieu de travail ;
4° Valeur limite biologique, la limite de concentration dans le milieu biologique approprié de l’agent concerné, de ses métabolites ou d’un indicateur d’effet ;
5° Valeur limite d’exposition professionnelle, sauf indication contraire, la limite de la moyenne pondérée en fonction du temps de la concentration d’un agent chimique dangereux dans l’air de la zone de respiration d’un travailleur au cours d’une période de référence déterminée.
