Article R4451-44 of the French Labour Code

I.-When the installation is commissioned and after any significant change in working methods and conditions likely to affect the health and safety of workers, the employer shall carry out measurements in the delimited areas and in the workplaces adjoining these areas in accordance with Article R. 4451-24, to the initial verification of:

1° The level of external exposure;

2° Where applicable, the concentration of radioactive activity in the air or surface contamination;

3° The concentration of radon activity in the air, where the area is delimited for radon.

If necessary, it will check the effectiveness of the protection and alarm systems put in place to prevent exposure to ionising radiation.

II.-These initial checks are carried out by an accredited body under the conditions set out in Article R. 4451-51.

Article R4451-44

I.-A la mise en service de l’installation et à l’issue de toute modification importante des méthodes et des conditions de travail susceptible d’affecter la santé et la sécurité des travailleurs, l’employeur procède, au moyen de mesurages, dans les zones délimitées et dans les lieux de travail attenants à ces zones au titre de l’article R. 4451-24, à la vérification initiale :

1° Du niveau d’exposition externe ;

2° Le cas échéant, de la concentration de l’activité radioactive dans l’air ou de la contamination surfacique ;

3° De la concentration d’activité du radon dans l’air, lorsque la zone est délimitée au titre du radon.

Il procède, le cas échéant, à la vérification de l’efficacité des dispositifs de protection et d’alarme mis en place pour prévenir des situations d’exposition aux rayonnements ionisants.

II.-Ces vérifications initiales sont réalisées par un organisme accrédité dans les conditions prévues à l’article R. 4451-51.
