Article R743-21 of the French Code governing the entry and residence of foreign nationals and the right of asylum

On receipt of the request for extension, the court clerk will notify the foreign national of his or her right to choose a lawyer. The liberty and custody judge will have one appointed for him/her ex officio if the foreign national so requests.

Dès réception de la requête aux fins de prolongation, le greffier avise l’étranger de son droit de choisir un avocat. Le juge des libertés et de la détention lui en fait désigner un d’office si l’étranger le demande.
