Article R8123-1 of the French Labour Code

The Medical Inspector for Work contributes to all the tasks of the decentralised departments reporting to the Ministers for Work, Employment and Vocational Training.
In this capacity, he/she formulates the opinions and takes the decisions provided for by the legal provisions.
He/she is in particular responsible for studying occupational risks and their prevention. It is responsible for providing information to occupational health physicians and workforce health physicians, whom it involves in the studies undertaken.
It is responsible for the technical supervision of the activities of workforce health physicians.

Le médecin inspecteur du travail concourt à l’ensemble des missions des services déconcentrés relevant des ministres chargés du travail, de l’emploi et de la formation professionnelle.
A ce titre, il formule les avis et prend les décisions prévues par les dispositions légales.
Il est notamment chargé de l’étude des risques professionnels et de leur prévention. Il exerce une mission d’information au bénéfice des médecins du travail et des médecins de main-d’œuvre, qu’il associe aux études entreprises.
Il est chargé du contrôle technique de l’activité des médecins de main-d’œuvre.
