Article L172-11 of the French Insurance Code

The insurer is liable for material damage caused to insured objects by any fortune of the sea or by an event of force majeure.

The insurer is also liable for

1° The contribution of the insured objects to the general average, except if this results from a risk excluded by the insurance;

2° Expenses incurred as a result of a risk covered in order to protect the insured object from material damage or to limit the damage.

L’assureur répond des dommages matériels causés aux objets assurés par toute fortune de mer ou par un événement de force majeure.

L’assureur répond également :

1° De la contribution des objets assurés à l’avarie commune, sauf si celle-ci provient d’un risque exclu par l’assurance ;

2° Des frais exposés par suite d’un risque couvert en vue de préserver l’objet assuré d’un dommage matériel ou de limiter le dommage.
