Tubal or vas deferens ligation for contraceptive purposes may not be performed on a minor. It may only be performed if the adult concerned has expressed a free, reasoned and deliberate wish in the light of clear and full information about its consequences.
This surgical procedure may only be carried out in a health establishment and after consultation with a doctor.
During the initial consultation, the doctor must :
– inform the patient of the medical risks involved and the consequences of the operation ;
– provide the patient with a written information pack.
The operation may not be carried out until four months have elapsed since the initial medical consultation and the person concerned has confirmed in writing that he or she wishes to undergo the operation.
Doctors are never obliged to carry out this procedure for contraceptive purposes, but they must inform the person concerned of their refusal at the first consultation.
