Article L2541-20 of the French General Code of Local Authorities

The mayor exercises the attributions falling under the administration of the State which are entrusted to him by law or regulations as well as those referred to him by the decisions of the representative of the State in the department.

As an organ of the State administration, the mayor is responsible only to the State authorities.

Article L2541-20

Le maire exerce les attributions relevant de l’administration de l’Etat qui lui sont confiées par la loi ou les règlements ainsi que celles qui lui sont renvoyées par les décisions du représentant de l’Etat dans le département.

Comme organe de l’administration de l’Etat, le maire n’est responsable que vis-à-vis des autorités de l’Etat.
