Article L512-63 of the French Monetary and Financial Code

Cooperative banks are credit institutions.

They may receive deposits from any natural or legal person.

They must grant at least 80% of their loans to their members, their members’ members, cooperative societies, mutual benefit societies or mutual insurance companies or supplementary professional retirement funds constituted in the form of mutual insurance companies governed by the Insurance Code, non-profit associations governed by the law of 1 July 1901 or the local law applicable in the departments of Bas-Rhin, Haut-Rhin and Moselle, as well as local authorities or public establishments and semi-public companies pursuant to article L. 221-12.

Les sociétés coopératives de banque sont des établissements de crédit.

Elles peuvent recevoir des dépôts de toute personne physique ou morale.

Elles doivent accorder 80 % au moins de leurs concours à leurs sociétaires, aux membres de ceux-ci, à des sociétés coopératives, à des sociétés mutualistes ou des sociétés à forme mutuelle ou des fonds de retraite professionnelle supplémentaire constitués sous forme de sociétés d’assurance mutuelle régis par le code des assurances, à des associations sans but lucratif régies par la loi du 1er juillet 1901 ou la loi locale applicable dans les départements du Bas-Rhin, du Haut-Rhin et de la Moselle ainsi qu’à des collectivités ou établissements publics et des sociétés d’économie mixte en application de l’article L. 221-12.
