Article R1261-4 of the French Public Health Code

When the body arrives at the establishment, it is taken in charge by the body reception structure which ensures its preservation until the end of the medical teaching and research activities, except in the situations provided for in III and IV of article R. 1261-18.

An identifying number is allocated in order to guarantee the confidentiality of the donor’s identity for the duration of the medical teaching and research activities. This number is the only means of identifying the body for the duration of its use.

The identifying number is recorded in the register provided for in article R. 1261-32 kept by the person in charge of the body reception facility.

The identity of the donor’s body is returned to the donor at the end of medical teaching and research activities with a view to funeral operations or the return of the body or ashes to the reference person designated in application of IV of article R. 1261-1, to the family or to the next of kin.

A l’arrivée du corps dans l’établissement, celui-ci est pris en charge par la structure d’accueil des corps qui assure sa conservation jusqu’au terme des activités d’enseignement médical et de recherche, en dehors des situations prévues aux III et IV de l’article R. 1261-18.

Un numéro identifiant est attribué afin de garantir la confidentialité de l’identité du donneur pendant la durée des activités d’enseignement médical et de recherche. Ce numéro constitue l’unique moyen d’identifier le corps pour la durée de son utilisation.

Le numéro identifiant est inscrit dans le registre prévu à l’article R. 1261-32 que tient le responsable de la structure d’accueil des corps.

L’identité du corps du donneur lui est restituée à l’issue des activités d’enseignement médical et de recherche en vue des opérations funéraires ou de la restitution du corps ou des cendres à la personne référente désignée en application du IV de l’article R. 1261-1, à la famille ou aux proches.
