Peritoneal dialysis is carried out at home or in the place where the patient resides, even temporarily. For the purposes of this provision, a long-term care facility or retirement home is considered to be the patient’s place of residence.
Whether manual or automated, this technique is performed by the patient himself, with or without the assistance of a third party.
For children, peritoneal dialysis is carried out at home, after the family has been trained by the paediatric nephrology department treating the child.
Any healthcare establishment receiving patients treated with peritoneal dialysis must be able to allow them to continue their treatment while they are in hospital. For peritoneal dialysis, the health establishment which holds the authorisation to treat chronic renal failure by means of extrarenal purification is responsible for training patients and monitoring them until they are referred to another dialysis modality or to hospital if necessary.
