Chapter V: Electrical installations in buildings and their fittings

Electrical equipment is selected and installed with due regard to voltage and in such a way as to withstand in complete safety the environmental conditions specific to the location in which it is installed and to which it may be subjected.

In premises or locations where there is a risk of fire or explosion, electrical installations are designed and built with these risks in mind.

Premises or locations reserved for the production, conversion or distribution of electricity, known as electrical service premises or locations, are designed and built in such a way as to ensure both: 1° Accessibility to equipment and ease of movement; 2° Protection against electric shock; 3° Prevention of the risk of burns and fire; 4° Prevention of the risk of the appearance of a toxic or asphyxiating atmosphere caused by the…

The references of the approved installation standards applicable to electrical installations are published in the Journal officiel de la République française by order of the ministers responsible for labour, agriculture and construction. An order by these same ministers may declare a provision contained in these standards inapplicable if it does not meet or contravenes the requirements of this chapter.

Electrical installations, carried out in accordance with the corresponding provisions of the installation standards mentioned in Article R. 4215-14 and their application guides, are deemed to meet the requirements of this chapter.

Electrical equipment used for disconnection, protection against overcurrents and protection against electric shocks complies either with the approved French standards applicable to it, or with the technical specifications of legislation in another Member State of the European Union or of a State party to the Agreement establishing the European Economic Area, ensuring an equivalent level of safety.

Emergency lighting systems are designed and installed in accordance with the provisions of the order provided for in article R. 4227-14.
