Article D594-1 of the French Code of Criminal Procedure

For the application of article 803-5, if the person suspected or prosecuted has not requested the assistance of an interpreter but there is a doubt as to his ability to speak or understand the French language, the authority conducting his hearing or before which this person appears shall ensure by all appropriate means that he speaks and understands this language. If it appears that the person does not speak or understand French, the interpreter must be provided without delay.

Pour l’application de l’article 803-5, si la personne soupçonnée ou poursuivie n’a pas demandé à bénéficier de l’assistance d’un interprète mais qu’il existe un doute sur sa capacité à parler ou comprendre la langue française, l’autorité qui procède à son audition ou devant laquelle cette personne comparaît s’assure par tous moyens appropriés qu’elle parle et comprend cette langue. S’il apparaît que la personne ne parle pas ou ne comprend pas la langue française, l’assistance de l’interprète doit intervenir sans délai.
