Article D594-5 of the French Code of Criminal Procedure

The right of suspected or accused persons to the assistance of an interpreter pursuant to the provisions of this code also applies to persons with speech or hearing impairments.

If their condition so warrants, such persons shall be assisted during the hearing, as well as in the case provided for in article D. 594-3, for their interviews with their lawyer, by a sign language interpreter or by any qualified person mastering a language, method or technical device enabling them to communicate with each other.

Le droit des personnes suspectées ou poursuivies à bénéficier de l’assistance d’un interprète en application des dispositions du présent code s’applique également aux personnes présentant des troubles de la parole ou de l’audition.


Si leur état le justifie, ces personnes sont assistées au cours de l’audition, ainsi que dans le cas prévu par l’article D. 594-3, pour leurs entretiens avec leur avocat, par un interprète en langue des signes ou par toute personne qualifiée maîtrisant un langage, une méthode ou un dispositif technique permettant de communiquer avec elles.
