Article R342-20 of the French Code governing the entry and residence of foreign nationals and the right of asylum

On receipt of the application for extension, the court clerk notifies the foreign national of his or her right to choose a lawyer. If the foreign national so requests, the judge will have one appointed for him/her ex officio.

Dès réception de la requête aux fins de prolongation, le greffier avise l’étranger de son droit de choisir un avocat. Le juge lui en fait désigner un d’office si l’étranger le demande.
