Elderly patients requiring geriatric care because of their polypathology and risk of dependency are cared for :
1° As a matter of priority, subject to the availability of permanent medical care, by direct admission to an acute geriatric medical facility;
2° In the absence of such a facility, and subject to medical availability, in any specialty facility corresponding to the patient’s acute pathology;
3° Or in the emergency department when the patient’s state of health so requires.
When care is provided using one of the last two methods, it must be possible to call on the services of a geriatrician or a doctor trained in the care of the elderly, with a view to organising the patient’s health and medico-social care.
