A retired doctor who is not practising may only be called upon to issue a death certificate if it is impossible for a practising doctor to draw up such a certificate within a reasonable period of time.
A retired doctor who is not in active practice and who wishes to be authorised to draw up death certificates must apply to the Conseil Départemental de l’Ordre des Médecins in his or her place of residence. They must be registered with the ordre and, if necessary, request to be registered for this purpose.
The Conseil Départemental de l’Ordre verifies the applicant’s registration on the roll, checks his or her skills and draws up a list of retired doctors authorised to issue death certificates. This list is made available to practising doctors in the department, the departmental emergency medical service and the regional health agency.
